This half length Virgin Mary is holding the Baby Jesus on her right side, while a winged cherub's head nestles under her folded arm. The plaque is a reproduction of the marble original created by Benedetto da Maiano (1442-1497). This 17th Century Imola Madonna was originally displayed in rural shrines where it was such a popular focus of devotion that even miracles and wondrous powers were attributed to it. Eventually removed from these precarious contexts, the Madonna was then kept on chapel and sanctuary altars.
