This half length Virgin Mary is holding a book in her left hand and Baby Jesus in her right, who is standing up and stretching out for an embrace. This early 17th century image of the Madonna of Fontanelice is also known as the Madonna of the Pilastro (Pillar) or the Rio (Stream), since it was originally housed in a pillar on the banks of the Rio Canova stream in the parish of Pieve del Gesso.
