Our Lady of the Woods, Alfonsine. Dimensions: 23.5 x 26 x 2.8 cm.

This half length Virgin Mary is holding the Baby Jesus on her right side. Her head is uncovered and her long hair reaches down to her shoulders. There is a winged cherub's head at the bottom. The religious tradition attached to the "Spreti di Alfonsine" Wood (where the parish church now stands) began on 10th April 1714, when a man fell out of a tree there and an image of the Virgin Mary appeared on its trunk to warn others of the danger. Following the incident, believers began to meet at the tree to pray before the Madonna and numerous miraculous cures were recorded.
