This plaque depicts the Immaculate Conception as well as various devotional symbols, including: "the hearts of Jesus and Mary", a cross on a horizontal staff intertwined with the letter M and twelve stars running round the oval frame. This iconography is part of the Marian cult of the "Miraculous Medal". This particular belief originated in 1830 when the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine LabourÃ©. The Virgin showed her two symbolic images and told her to make a medallion with the images on either side of it. In this ceramic plaque the symbols are shown on one side only.
